Lieutenant Schum has been a member of the Bensalem Township Police Department since 2006. Since 2022, Lieutenant Schum serves as the Support Services Commander. His duties include oversight of the Canine Unit, Clerical Staff, Internal Affairs, Liability, Payroll, Police Budget, and Records. Prior to his appointment as Lieutenant, he served over 16 years in the Patrol Division. Lieutenant Schum was promoted to Corporal in 2014 and Sergeant in 2019. Furthermore, Lieutenant Schum is an active K-9 handler and trainer. Since 2007, Lieutenant Schum has worked two dogs. His first K-9 partner, K-9 Argo specialized in patrol and drug detection. Over the course of their career, both were recognized as the United States Police Canine Association Region 6 “Top Dog” canine team three times. His current partner, K-9 Asko specializes in explosive detection.
Lieutenant Schum is very involved within the Bensalem Community. He currently serves as the Vice Co-Chair for Building a Better Bensalem Together (B3T) and works on many community projects with the organization. He also works closely with the Bensalem Lions Club and the Bensalem Township School District to provide resources and organize the annual Bensalem Lions Club Food Basket Drive during the holiday season. In 2023, Lieutenant Schum was recognized as the Police Officer of the Year by the Rotary Club of Bensalem. In 2024, Lieutenant Schum was awarded the Champion of Diversity Award by Parx Casino for his positive impact to unify the Bensalem Community.
Lieutenant Schum is a long-time Bensalem resident. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice from the Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Joseph’s University. He is also a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command and Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).
