The Bensalem Township K-9 Unit was established in 1962 and has assisted the department and the community in various ways. Currently, the unit is comprised of seven dogs. Canines Bowie, Jango, Rico, and Max are assigned to the Patrol Division. All four canines are cross-trained and serve as dual-purpose canines. These canines assist the Patrol Division in situations that require extensive searches to locate hidden suspects, missing children, discarded evidence, and hidden narcotics. They are also trained to protect police officers and apprehend criminals when necessary.
Canine Moose is a single-purpose canine that specializes in drug detection. Both canines assist the department and outside law enforcement agencies with narcotics detection and investigations.
Canine Asko is a single-purpose dog that specializes in explosive detection. He assists the department and other outside law enforcement agencies by conducting explosive detection sweeps at various events or when a bomb threat is made at a specific location.
All canines endure extensive training programs to ensure they are the best in their specialty. Furthermore, each canine team is annually certified by the United States Police Canine Association. These dogs assist us in our fight against crime and help the department build a relationship with township residents through numerous community demonstrations.
