Every school day, millions of children across the country rely on school buses to get to and from school safely. Did you know that school buses are among the safest vehicles on the road? In fact, less than 1% of all traffic fatalities involve children on school transportation vehicles.
However, the greatest risk to children isn’t while they’re on the bus—it’s when they’re approaching or leaving it.
That’s why School Bus Safety is a top priority in Pennsylvania, and it’s a shared responsibility. Students, parents, teachers, school staff, transportation workers, and especially drivers all play vital roles in keeping our children safe.
In just the first two weeks of our new school year with the bus safety program (September), Warrington Township Police reviewed over 70 violations—and that’s in our township alone.
We’re seeing the majority of violations on four-lane highways where drivers mistakenly believe they don’t need to stop when a school bus is on the opposite side. Common locations include:
This is incorrect. When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, ALL traffic must stop, unless separated by a physical barrier.
The goal of this enforcement program is clear: reduce violations and protect children. Warrington Police are committed to upholding Pennsylvania law and ensuring school bus safety on every road—not just neighborhood streets.
We will continue issuing civil violations to any driver who fails to stop for a school bus with its stop arm deployed—no exceptions.
We’ll continue to share educational resources to raise awareness and ensure compliance. Based on research and proven results from nearby departments, we are confident this program will reduce the risk of death or serious injury to children in our community.
Let’s work together to make every school day a safe one.
Their safety is in your hands.
