Dear Family Member or Care Provider,
You know better than anyone the struggles that face individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Newtown Township Police Department recognizes that it is sometimes difficult to communicate with people with ASD. We understand that being involved in a vehicle stop or a traffic accident could be especially upsetting for people with ASD.
The primary goal of the Blue Envelope Program is to aid drivers with the documentation needed in the event of a vehicle stop or traffic accident. This envelope also helps police officers and other emergency personnel to identify those with ASD and guides them through an interaction.
Please review the below information with your driver and place all pertinent paperwork inside of the blue envelope.
HOW IT WORKS:
Drivers:
- If pulled over, drivers with Autism Spectrum Disorder can present the designated blue envelope to the police officer.
Outside of the envelope:
- Instructions for the driver on what to do during the traffic stop.
- Guidance for the officers on how to approach the situation and communicate effectively.
Inside of the envelope:
- A place to keep important documents like driver's license, registration and insurance information.
- Emergency contact information.
- A place to indicate whether the driver is verbal or non-verbal.
Officers:
- The envelope serves as a visual cue, alerting officers to modify their approach and use patience and clear language.
BENEFITS:
For drivers:
- Encourages preparedness and provides clear instructions for traffic stops.
For officers:
- Helps them understand the situation and communicate effectively, leading to safer and more positive interactions.
WHERE TO GET A BLUE ENVELOPE:
