Pair Guilty in Bristol Borough Botched Robbery, Shooting

A jury has convicted one man and another has pleaded guilty for their roles in a violent 2018 robbery that saw one man shot in the face and another beaten in the street in Bristol Borough.

Jonathan Black, 22, of Bristol Borough, was found guilty Thursday of 28 counts, including four counts of attempted murder, multiple counts of robbery and aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy and related charges stemming from the June 3, 2018 incident.

The jury found Black had intended to kill the four occupants of a white Volkswagen Jetta when he fired at least two shots from a .380 semi-automatic handgun just before 11 p.m. in the area of Spruce and Headley streets. One bullet struck a rear passenger in the face and another lodged in the Jetta’s tire. Despite serious injuries, the passenger survived.

At the end of three days of testimony, jurors returned their verdict of guilty on all counts after about three hours of deliberation. Judge Rea B. Boylan, who presided over the trial, ordered Black’s sentencing deferred for a pre-sentence investigation.

Black conspired with co-defendant Jordan Jones at first to cheat one of the Jetta’s passengers in a gun sale, but decided on strong-armed robbery once the pair realized the victims were in possession of marijuana.

Prior to the incident, Black, under the moniker “J Weezy,” agreed via messages sent on Snapchat to sell a gun to one of the victims for $450. The purchaser, accompanied by the other three victims, arrived in the Jetta and received an empty bag in exchange for the money.

After the car drove off, Black then told the victims to return, claiming he had forgotten to put the gun in the bag. When they did, Jones yanked a passenger from the car, the two defendants proceeded to assault him and Black pulled a gun.

Jones, tasked with stealing items from the car, ducked his head into the Jetta, but the vehicle began to pull away. As the car drove off, Black ran after it and fired, exclaiming that he wanted to kill everyone in the vehicle.

Bristol Borough Police stopped the vehicle later the same evening after the passenger struck by gunfire already had been dropped off at the hospital.

After a few weeks on the run, Black and Jones were arrested at an apartment in Bensalem belonging to Black’s girlfriend.

Jones, 19, admitted to his role in the incident and pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and conspiracy. He was sentenced Friday to four to 10 years in state prison with 15-years concurrent probation.

The case was investigated by the Bristol Borough Police Department and prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Thomas C. Gannon.
