A 48-year-old man was sentenced to up to 30 years in state prison today after pleading guilty to sexually abusing his adopted daughter.

Michael Abel, of Northampton Township, pleaded guilty in June to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, corruption of minors and indecent assault.

He was sentenced Tuesday before Common Pleas Judge Stephen A. Corr to 10 years to 25 years on the first offense and eight months to five years on the second offense, with both sentences running consecutively.  He will also be required to register as a Megan's Law offender for life.

The charges stemmed from a child abuse report received by the Northampton Township Police Department on December 11, 2024. The report alleged multiple incidents of sexual abuse against his then 11-year-old daughter, who was adopted from China in 2016.

An investigation was launched by Detective Ryan Jumper of the Northampton Township Police.  During a forensic interview, the victim disclosed five separate instances of sexual abuse that occurred between January 2021 and December 2024.

Abel was arrested and charged on January 9, 2025.
