Justin Mohn shot his father in the head on Tuesday in their Middletown Township home before posting a disturbing YouTube video holding his father’s decapitated head, District Attorney Jen Schorn announced Friday during a news conference to provide additional details of the horrific crime.
During the news conference, Schorn and Middletown Township Police Chief Joseph Bartorilla recognized all the law enforcement officers who were instrumental in making such a quick apprehension hours after the murder of Michael F. Mohn, possibly preventing further tragedy.
District Attorney Schorn thanked the investigative team on the case, “for all the work they’ve done thus far, and all the work they are going to continue to do on this case.”
Chief Bartorilla and District Attorney Schorn also wanted to convey their condolences to the devastated family and the tight-knit Upper Orchard community.
“Me and my entire police department, our hearts ache for the Mohn family,” Bartorilla said. “We will be with them every step of the way through this incredible ordeal that they are going through. As the whole community mourns and aches over this, our police department will be right there with them.”
“This is truly unimaginable,” Schorn said.
Justin Mohn, of the 100 block of Upper Orchard Drive, was arrested hours after the killing in Fort Indiantown Gap, Lebanon County, and was charged with first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and possession of an instrument of crime. He is currently in Bucks County Correctional Facility without bail.
At the news conference, Schorn provided findings from an autopsy conducted Thursday that showed that 68-year-old Michael F. Mohn was shot in the head before he was decapitated using a machete and knife.
This investigation began around 7 p.m. Tuesday after Middletown Township Police were dispatched to 145 Upper Orchard Drive for a report of a deceased male.
While enroute, officers were told an elderly male had been found by his wife in the downstairs bathroom with a large amount of blood around him and that he had been decapitated. A machete and a large knife were located in the bathtub.
Police located the male’s body in the first-floor bathroom. The deceased male’s head was located inside of a plastic bag, which was inside of a cooking pot in a first-floor bedroom next to the bathroom. Police located bloody rubber gloves in another first-floor bedroom and more bloody rubber gloves in a trashcan next to a desk in that room.
The victim was later identified as Michael Mohn. He lived at the home with his wife and his adult son, Justin Mohn, who was missing when police arrived.
The victim's wife told police she had last been home at approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday and her husband and son were the only ones there. She also reported that her husband’s white 2009 Toyota Corolla and her son were gone when she came home.
Police later received information about a 14-minute video posted to YouTube, which showed Justin Mohn wearing the same style rubber gloves observed at the crime scene. In the video, he picks up the decapitated head of his father, identifying him by name and as his father. He also calls for an uprising against the federal government.
His father was a federal employee with the Army Corps of Engineers.
The investigation led police to Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County where Justin Mohn’s phone was tracked to the National Guard Training Center at around 9 p.m. There, he drove past barricades, climbed a barbed wire fence, and entered a secured military installation.
Justin Mohn was taken into custody a short time later by the Fort Indiantown Gap Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police. He was in possession of a loaded Sig Sauer 9mm pistol.
The investigation found that Justin Mohn went to Fort Indiantown Gap in an effort to mobilize the National Guard to raise arms against the federal government, Schorn said.
She said that the investigation found that he legally purchased the firearm on Monday, the day before the murder, from a gun store in Croydon.
This case is being investigated by Detectives with the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office and the Middletown Township Police Department, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Fort Indiantown Gap Police Department, and Pennsylvania State Police.
This case is assigned for prosecution to Chief Deputy District Attorney Matthew S. Lannetti, Deputy District Attorney Ashley C. Towhey and Assistant District Attorney Christine Sassane.
