Attempted Fraud Scam by Telephone

A husband and wife came into the police station to report that they may have possibly been targeted for an attempted fraud - It was reported that a phone call was received by the couple stating they had won a prize in the PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE SWEEPSTAKES. The caller had enough information that the couple thought the call may have been legitimate. It was decided that after several calls over several days the caller suggested the couple go to the bank and obtain money to send the caller to cover the INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE concerns. At this point the couple became doubtful of the prize and decided not to send any money. They came to the police department for guidance in this matter and to report this incident to police to prevent anyone else from becoming a victim. The phone listings for THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMINSSION 202-326-2222 along with the BUCKS COUNTY CONSUMER PROTECTION at 800-942-2669 were supplied to the couple so they could file a complaint with those agencies as well. Because of the personal information the caller had possibly obtained from the CLEARING HOUSE application they also decided to RED FLAG their credit card accounts and advise their bank in case any additional attempts to access their accounts or identity were made. No further action was taken at this time.
