Our Department has seen an increase in reports of scams where the victim receives a call from their grandson using their actual grandson's phone number and full name. The victims have been advised their grandson was in an accident and now in Police custody. In one report, a second male, who identified himself as the grandson's attorney, got on the phone and told the victim he needed a large amount of cash in order for their grandson to be released from Police custody. After obtaining the requested cash from the bank a male came to their residences to retrieve the money.
Please be aware, the scammers can "clone" a phone number so it appears they are calling from a family member's phone. Please take precaution and contact other family to confirm if there really is any trouble. Please do not hand over large amounts of cash, gift card numbers, and/or Bitcoin to an unknown person.
