ANNUAL OFFICER AWARDS CEREMONY - MAY 7, 2019

The Upper Southampton Township Police Department presented their annual awards to officers at the May 7th Board of Supervisors meeting.  During the year, officers can nominate fellow officers and citizens whose acts contribute to the overall efforts of the police department. The nominations are forwarded to an awards committee. The committee reviews the nomination and determines if there is merit to approve the award.  The eligible awards are ranked and have classes. Commendations are for Valor, Bravery, Heroism, Life Saving, Merit and a Letter.  Distinguished acts are Unit Citations and the Service Award.

The officers who received awards were provided a certificate and bar pin detailing their accomplishments. All of the officers being recognized were told to invite their families and friends to share in their accomplishments.

Chief MacPherson is very proud of the efforts that our members of this police department have put forth. He is always saying what a great police department we have and it was qualified by the awards presented.


Commendation for Life Saving

On October 27, 2018 at 0826 hours, Ofc. Bankert, Ofc. Ungurean and Ofc. Drakeley responded to a business on James Way on the report of a 39 year old male subject who was unresponsive due to having a possible cardiac event.  The officers quickly arrived on-scene before EMS and began assessing the subject.  During this assessment, officers discovered that the subject was not breathing and had no pulse.  The officers took immediate action by initiating team CPR and applying an AED which provided a shock to the subject.  Tri-Hampton Rescue Squad arrived on-scene and began their care for the subject as officers continued to support their efforts.  The subjects pulse and respirations were soon-after restored prior to transport to the hospital.

The victim’s life was clearly saved by Ofc. Bankert, Ofc. Ungurean and Ofc. Drakeley’s quick response to the incident location, assessing the patient and applying lifesaving techniques to the subject that morning.

On September 22, 2018 at 0104 hours, Ofc. Johnson and Ofc. Brown responded to a residence on Buck Road on the report of a 28 year old male subject who was unresponsive due to an overdose.  The officers quickly arrived on-scene before EMS and began assessing the subject.  During this assessment, officers discovered that the subject was not breathing and had a faint pulse.  The officers took immediate action by administering a dose of Narcan and initiating CPR.  A second dose of Narcan was administered and the subjects pulse began breathing on his own.  Tri-Hampton Rescue Squad arrived on-scene and began their care for the subject and he soon after regained consciousness and was later transported to the hospital.

On April 7, 2018 at 2128 hours, Sgt. Jones, Ofc. Bankert and Ofc. Chonko responded to a serious two vehicle traffic accident in the 300 block of Street Road.  Upon arriving on-scene, Ofc. Bankert observed an unresponsive 8 year old boy in the backseat of one of the involved vehicles and immediately began performing lifesaving efforts on him until Tri-Hampton Rescue Squad arrived to transport him to the hospital.  The young boy later succumb to his injuries.  Ofc. Chonko attended to the other persons involved and Sgt. Jones managed the scene.

Det. Schirmer and Ofc. Hartranft were called to the scene to assist in the investigation and gathered critical information and evidence to reconstruct the accident.  After a thorough investigation, the operator of the vehicle in which the young boy was in was arrested for Homicide by Vehicle while DUI and other underlying offenses.

In January of 2019, the subject plead guilty to the charges and is currently awaiting sentencing.  

Sgt. Jones, Ofc. Bankert, Ofc. Chonko, Ofc. Hartranft and Det. Schirmer displayed their teamwork, experience and investigative skills by thoroughly investigating this traffic accident and identifying the subject responsible for this tragic event.

This Distinguished Unit Citation is presented to Sgt. Jones, Ofc. Bankert, Ofc. Chonko, Ofc. Hartranft and Det. Schirmer for their outstanding accomplishment resulting from teamwork which led to the arrest and guilty plea of a Homicide by Vehicle while DUI subject from 4/7/2018.

During the 2018 calendar year, Ofc. Michael Kaminski and Ofc. Andrew Brown led the Police Department in traffic enforcement statistics for traffic citations and written warnings.  Their continuous proactive approach towards traffic enforcement enhances the safety of our Township highways and roadways.

Ofc. Robert Ungurean

During the 2018 calendar year, Ofc. Robert Ungurean led the Police Department in in arrests for Driving under the Influence of Alcohol/Narcotics offenses.  His continuous proactive approach towards traffic enforcement and identifying impaired operators enhances the safety of our Township highways and roadways.

Ofc. Andrew Brown

During the 2018 calendar year, Ofc. Andrew Brown led the Department with the most arrests for the possession of narcotics offenses. His continuous desire for training in the area of narcotics interdiction combined with his proactive approach in identifying these types of crimes enhances the safety of our Township and the quality of life of our residents.

Master Level / International Conference of Police Chaplains

Chaplain Paul Randolph

Police Chaplain Paul Randolph was awarded the Master Level of Police Chaplains by the International Conference of Police Chaplains.   The requirements of  this certificate are 350 CEUs of professional studies and 10 years or more as a police chaplain.   Chaplain Paul also serves as Chaplain with the PA State Police and has most recently been appointed Chaplain with the United States Secret Service.   We are truly blessed to have him as USPD’s Chaplain.
