Information about “Check washing”
The thefts from the mailboxes involve stolen personal and or business checks that are being mailed out. Some checks have been recovered during this investigation.
These checks were “washed” and altered to steal funds from victims.
We are aware from surrounding law enforcement agencies that thieves are targeting outgoing mail as indicated by a raised flag on the mailbox.
Please review your financial statements for any suspicious activity and contact the bank to cancel any checks that may have been stolen.
To combat the thefts, we are recommending the following:
Deposit outgoing mail at indoor post office boxes
Retrieve incoming mail from the mailbox as soon as possible after delivery If you are away or delayed, ask a trusted person or neighbor to retrieve your mail
Anticipate delivery of checks or credit cards, and contact the senders if you believe the delivery is past due
Immediately report to police any suspicious activity, missing items, or unusual activity on financial statements
