On Monday, June 16, 2020, two Quakertown Borough residents reported that they received fraudulent unemployment compensation claim checks in the mail.  One resident was still employed and received two checks totaling $11,000.00, after never filing an unemployment claim.  Another resident who did sign up for unemployment received two checks totaling $8,000.00.  Scammers are using personal information from previous U.S. data breaches to apply for unemployment benefits.  If you receive/have received unemployment checks that you believe to be fraudulent, do not cash the checks as you will be responsible for paying back the money.  If a resident receives fraudulent unemployment checks for claims that they did not sign up for, or dollar amounts in excess of their allotted payment, please contact the Quakertown Borough Police Department at 215-536-5002.   The US Secret Service has also advised that recipients of these checks go to the PA Department of Labor and Industry website to report identity theft.
